Skeleton in the closet或是英國習慣用的 skeleton in the cupboard(櫥櫃)，是指極力想要掩蓋的醜事、秘密，或者是不可外揚的家醜。

想像一下有個故事：從前有個男人殺了人，為了怕被發現就把屍體藏在家裡的衣櫃裡面。藏在衣櫃中幾十年之後某天，鄰居發現了”He had a skeleton in his closet!!”(他的衣櫃裡有具骷髏！！)，真相終於大白了！
