很多台灣學生因為中文的干擾，說或寫出來的英文即使句型和文法是正確的，但是因為一字之差，母語為英語的人士讀或聽起來，就是覺得怪怪的。更嚴重的會讓人誤會你要表達的原意。這些因為一字之差的英文，其實就是因為選字 word choice 錯誤的緣故。

請大家看看下面幾句英文，那一個字是需要更改的呢?

1. 在非洲最流行的疾病是什麼?

What is the most popular disease in Africa?

2. 他坐上計程車去公司了

He got on a taxi and went to the office.

3. 她一回家就開電視

She opened the TV as soon as she came home.

4. Jamie Oliver 是很棒的廚師

Jamie Oliver is a great cooker.

5. 車子在房子前面

The car is before the house.

1. What is the most common disease in Africa?

看到流行這個字，大家就會想到popular，不過 popular 的意思為 liked by a lot of people ，是會被大家喜歡的流行。但是疾病的流行是不好的，所以這裡用 popular 這個字非常不妥。用 common 表示 often seen or often happens (常見的)，更適合此句句意。

2. He got in a taxi and went to the office.

這裡是介係詞的錯誤。on 最基本的意思是”接觸某物的表面”， in 是”位於某個特定範圍的裡面”。搭乘 bus, train, airplane 等大型交通工具時，由於有沿著踏板或階梯等上車或登機的動作，而且我們可以在這些大型交通工具上行走，所以會用get on 來表式。而小型車是一上車就直接進到車子裡去了，所以用 get in 不可以用 get on 來表示坐小型車。get in a taxi 是坐在計程車裡面，若用 get on a taxi，會讓人以為你是坐在計程車車頂上呢!

3. She turned on the TV as soon as she came home.

中文的"開"用途很廣，可以開門，開車，開店，開電視，開電燈。但是英文的 open 當動詞為”打開”之意時，不能用在需要電的物品上，也不能用在供應水或瓦斯的器具上 ( Don’t use open and close to talk about things that use electricity or things that provide water or gas )，這些物品的開要用 turn on 或 switch on。例如: Can you turn on the taps? (你可以打開水龍頭嗎?)

4. Jamie Oliver is a great cook.

大家應該都熟記英文中 er 結束的單字通常是指”人”，而且指某種職業的人，例如 teacher, engineer, manager… 所以廚師當然就是 cooker 囉!!!

No ~ 這個字剛好不是喔!!! cooker 的意思是”烹調器具” 例如 pressure cooker 是壓力鍋， cook 才是廚師喔!!!

5. The car is in front of the house.

在……之前大家一定會想到 before 這個字，不過 before 常用在表示"時間"或某事物的"順序，重要性"等之前，例如： I must finish my work before next Monday. 若是“在某人或物的前面”，則通常用in front of，來表示在某位置之前。
